4 days off

Friday, October 10th-Monday, October 13th

I think I picked the perfect time for a 4 day break. It rained all weekend. Hard. On Friday, Howard (my new bff), suggested going through all my equipment, doing laundry and cleaning my boat.  What he was saying is “Keith, your boat is dirty as all get out and your clothes stink.”  He was right.

We, that is Howard, spent Friday power washing my boat, ropes, tent, etc.  I think he wanted to power wash me but refrained from doing so.  It was great seeing Howard break out the big equipment to clean my gear, truly a necessary activity.  On Friday evening, Howard suggested taking me up for a quick ride in his Cessna, definitely one of the “off river” highlights of the trip.  We flew north and completed a Red River recon mission, a far differnt perspective than river level.

I decided to take the weekend off to spend with Vicki and celebrate our 15 year anniversary.  She wouldn’t arrive in Alexandria until Saturday morning since I didn’t anticipate landing in Alexandria until Friday night.  I asked her to pick up a local newspaper before picking me up, she was astonished to find that I was on the cover of TheTownTalk, Alexandria’s local newspaper.  They interviewed me on Friday afternoon and ran a front page article on Saturday.  I was shocked it was on the front page, clearly a slow news day.  Anyway, it was a pretty neat article, a big thank you to Norm Miller for notifying the media.

Vicki and I had an ejoyable, relaxing weekend. She helped me resupply, buy some boots for upriver (cold weather and low river levels are anticipated) and decompress from “paddling mode.”

A big thank you to Howard and Linda for all their assistance and for having us stay at their home.

Oh, and I am on record as claiming Gone Girl is this generations Fatal Attraction.
